What Attracts Cockroaches To Your Home
Don't scratch your head wondering what attracts cockroaches to your lovely home. The answers seem obvious, but it appears some people are completely unaware of them. They're making common mistakes that just lures in more of these annoying and potentially hazardous pests. Are you one of those making these easily avoidable mistakes? Find out if you are and fix it before the infestation becomes uncontrollable or worse.
That Food Smells Good!
Imagine that you’re hungry; you haven’t eaten all day. You’re driving down the road--with your windows rolled down. It’s beautiful out and the weather is just right. It would be perfect if you weren’t so hungry. Suddenly, your mouth waters as your nose catches the delicious hint of grilled steaks and brats. One of the houses has the grill fired up. The juice drips and hits the hot charcoal. The flavor explodes into the air. The wind carries it your way. If only you could get a bit of that right now…
That is exactly how roaches are usually drawn to your home. The only difference is you probably won’t go sneaking into their yard for a chance at that steak. Roaches on the other hand, will make their way in immediately. It's not always the case, but roaches often enter homes because they smell food. Just like you and me, they love to eat. Just like us, they can't turn down the sweets and the greasy fattening stuff. Roaches have a very good sense of smell, so when you leave either of these out, it catches their "noses" real fast.
They also love eating decaying matter. Their cousins who prefer to live outdoors enjoy decaying matters like trees and leaves. These guys, who have adapted to living with humans, love rotting food thrown away by us. Sometimes we let the garbage fill up and smell before we take it outside. By the time we notice the stench, it has already grabbed the attention of nearby roaches passing by. By the time we get to taking out the trash, a few would have made their way in already.
Don't make the mistake of thinking they'll only eat food edible to us and rotting garbage. Roaches are not picky eaters. Yes, they do have their preferences. However they will not turn down something less appetizing if they have to. Have you ever heard someone say that they’ll eat anything? Well it’s true.
Some of the other things they’re willing to eat include:
• Bar soap
• Cardboard
• Glue (including the glue used to hold labels to cans and other food containers)
• Paper (magazines, your mail, etc.)
• Dead skin cells (from you and others living in your house)
• Dead roaches
• Other dead bugs
That’s just a short list. Once they’re in, they’ll find something they can eat. For a more information about what they will eat, check out pestsoff.com
Water Everywhere
I don’t think cockroaches are ever lured into your house from the smell of water, but cockroaches are attracted to easy access to water and a moist environment to live in. I could be wrong, but for now I’ll stick to that statement. If you know of a source that proves me wrong, please feel free to let me know so I can correct it for other viewers. They need to drink water to survive, so if you were by chance able to deny them access to water completely, they will either move out, or die off. They’ll likely move out.
Removing water access completely is easier said than done though. Roaches don’t need the same amount that we do. Most important of all, they don’t require “clean” water like we do. Just like how they’ll eat anything, they’ll drink anything.
Common sources of water for them include:
• Leaks (from drains and pipes)
• Sink drains
• Bathtub drains
• Toilet
• Water droplets left in sinks and tubs
• Basement drain
• Water, juice, soda, other liquids left open and out
• Spills that aren’t cleaned up
That’s just a quick list, but you get the idea. Try to eliminate as many sources from the list and think of any that I may have missed. Like I said earlier, it’s almost impossible to remove them all, but you can sure make it harder on them by dealing with most of them.
Home Sweet Home
When seeking for the perfect home, cockroaches will generally favor these three things:
• Warmth. They'd like a nice, warm and comfy place.
• Moisture. Moisture is what makes things a little more comfortable for them.
• Protection from dangers. If it's hidden or hard to reach, they’ll love it. What dangers are there in your home? You!
After food and water, they look for a comfortable home. Are you beginning to think you and those pests have had a lot in common? Perhaps even a little sympathy for them? Well don't. Sure they need the same necessities for survival as you do. However, it ends there. If the though of killing these invaders makes you feel uneasy then you need to rethink this through.
Do you have kids, pets or other loved ones in your home? If yes, do you want to expose them to risks that couldn't potentially make them very sick? What about your health? Do you want to risk getting sick? Can you afford to miss out from being sick?
Cockroaches are known to carry germs and diseases. They crawl through all sorts of places full of germs and harmful microorganisms. These stick to their bodies and legs. They're transferred to any of your food touched by the roaches. They get transferred to eating surfaces too. These include your tables, spoons, forks, plates, etc. The bottom line is get rid of them asap. Don't hesitate to eliminate them. Don't even stop to think about it. Just get on with it and take the necessary actions to eradicate them. If you've read through this then you have already completed one of the most necessary steps, educating yourself about what attracts cockroaches.
